As everyone knows by now, Amazon announced they were adding 25,000 jobs to the northern Virginia suburbs and to Queens. Atlanta was in the top 20 cities but didn’t land these coveted new Amazon jobs and all of the tax revenues (and other implications – positive and negative) that come with it. However, over the last couple of years Atlanta has seen a ridiculous number of businesses announce moves to the city.
In the last couple of years, State Farm announced they would add 10,000 jobs in Atlanta and NCR would add 5000. GE and Honeywell also announced new positions in Atlanta. Porsche and Mercedes-Benz announced big moves into the region, too.
Among financial services companies, last month, Blackrock announced they were adding about 1000 jobs here in Atlanta. Prior to this announcement, Goldman Sachs announced they were establishing a regional hub in Atlanta.
Among tech startups, a number of smaller firms announced plans to move and/or grow in Atlanta, including AirbusAerial, DefenseStorm, Dev/Con, and Groundfloor.
Considering Atlanta is already busting at the seams, as well as the embarrassment of riches from all of these new jobs, Atlantans shouldn’t be too upset they lost out to other cities for Amazon’s new HQs.
